The Department of Tourism was established in 1989 and is one of the most innovative providers of tourism education and research in New Zealand and the wider Asia-Pacific region.


 

The Role


    

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Fellow, full-time, fixed-term for a period of 9 months, to provide assistance with the development and launch of a Cultural Acumen Tourism Training program for small and medium sized tourism operators (SMEs). This project seeks to support SMEs to increase their cultural awareness and improve business preparedness to engage with international visitors from North Asia, South East Asia, and Latin America.


    

Key tasks include:


  • Refining the training programs, and interactive websites that have been developed for the project for commercial launch.
  • Organising launch events to introduce the training program to market.
  • Assess the effectiveness of the training program post-launch.
  • Travelling within New Zealand for project work.
  • Actively engaging with SMEs and the community at local, regional and national levels.

 


Your Skills and Experience


Essential:


  • A PhD (or near completion) in tourism or a related field.
  • You must be eligible to work in New Zealand to be considered for this position.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to collegiality, teamwork, collaboration, and cooperation.
  • Experience in media and communication.
  • Experience in research grant and journal article/book chapter writing.

Desirable:


  • Demonstrated skills in working with interactive websites and developing videos.

  • Strong background knowledge of tourism SMEs in New Zealand, and a cultural understanding of North Asia, South East Asia and/or Latin America.
  • Experience in producing industry training materials, including training programs and online learning courses.
