Postdoctoral Fellow in Space Physics-2300901

DIVISION OF SCIENCES
DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

About our team/Mō te tīma

The Physics Department of the University of Otago was the first Physics Department established in New Zealand, and physics was a foundation discipline when the University opened in July 1871. Today, the Department embraces innovative teaching methods, promotes a vigorous research ethos, and is committed both to Physics as a discipline and to its applications. Our key objectives are to provide students with the highest quality education, and to produce research of international excellence.

The Role/Te mahi

This role supports the New Zealand Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment Endeavour Fund research programme "Solar Tsunamis: Space-Weather Prediction and Risk Mitigation for New Zealand's Energy Infrastructure", under the direction of Professor Craig Rodger in the Department's Space Physics research group. The project is to investigate the hazard posed by geomagnetically induced currents to the New Zealand electrical transmission network.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the continued operation, support, and analysis of magnetic field observations. These observations are made by the recently deployed MANA network, a set of variometer instruments.

The candidate will assist with the operation of the Space Physics Group's experimental capabilities and will work towards the research and outreach components of the MBIE project, as directed by Professor Craig J. Rodger. The Fellow will work closely alongside multiple Otago-based research students and researchers, collaborating with other researchers from New Zealand, Europe, and North America.

Skills and Experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

Applicants should have a doctorate in physics, or doctorate nearing completion  (with a demonstrated strength in one of the areas of Space Physics, Ionospheric Physics, Geomagnetism, Space Weather and/or Geophysics), be highly motivated, and have excellent interpersonal communication skills. A drivers license is essential.

Experience in the analysis of space physics datasets, and specifically magnetic field ground-based measurements will be highly valued, as will existing field work skills. Experience in C++ and git are a bonus, as well as Linux.

The ideal candidate would have experience in research in space weather hazards, a combination of experimental and theoretical skills, and be very well versed in Matlab.
