This ground breaking research project is a world first in cumulative head impact research. The Project is funded by a World Rugby grant to Associate Professor Melanie Bussey and intends to gather head acceleration data from 700 community rugby players, from age 11 – adult, over the course of a single season. This is the largest cohort of athletes to be studied in a longitudinal design for head impact events. The aim is to gain insight into the cumulative head impact burden in male and female community rugby union players across a wide range of playing grades. Our goal is to explore the nature and extent of head impact exposure across a range of contact events and non-contact events, and to examine the potential influence of cumulative non-contact loading on direct contact outcomes.
