Āu Mahi | What You Will Do
We have an opportunity for a post-doctoral fellow to support the 'Greening of Death in Aotearoa: Co-Designing Sustainability Adaptations in Body Disposal' project. This project aims to co-design sustainable death practices in Aotearoa. We seek a researcher with a PhD Sociology or other social science discipline and ideally someone with an existing interest in and experience of research in a death related topic or sustainability issues, including at local authority level.

This role will contribute to a 3 year Marsden funded project, which runs until to April 2025. The postdoctoral researcher will play a key role in each stage of the research process.

Please note: this Marsden project is run through the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, NZ. However, there is no stipulation that the recipient must reside in Christchurch, as long as the recipient has stable internet and effective computer access and is willing to travel to project sites and for project team meetings when called to do so.

Mōu | Who You Are
To be successful in this role, you will have research-level knowledge in one or more of the specified areas, a record of research productivity, or clear potential, and have:

  • a PhD Sociology or other social science discipline
  • knowledge of relevant social science and methodological literature, including an appreciation of death studies debates and issues, and an interest in sustainability
  • working knowledge of qualitative and digital research methods that will enable the researcher to contribute to developing, populating, coding and analysing a materiality matrix and using mapping software to develop an Actor Network assemblage (ANT)
  • skills in any of the following: community consultation, research on sensitive topics, working across languages and cultures
  • experience with participatory and community-based social research.

You will work well within diverse cultural environments, as well as provide a positive contribution to the administration of the Faculty and the University more generally.
