Scion specialises in forest health, protection and biosecurity research, science and technology development for the forestry industry, wood products and wood-derived materials and plant-derived chemicals for modern day items, i.e. plant-based plastics.

Scion's new 2030 strategy - Transitioning New Zealand to a Circular Bioeconomy - focuses on providing New Zealand with methods for understanding the non-monetary benefits derived from our landscapes and forests and increasing forest wellbeing, and hence the health of the people; increasing value from forests grown for market, and developing a new primary industry of bio-fuels and bio-plastics.

With a newly established structure in place to ensure we have the right capability and talent to deliver on this 2030 vision, we are currently recruiting for a Portfolio Leader to lead the New Value from Digitising the Forestry Sector portfolio.   This portfolio aims to provide decision-makers with actionable information along the forestry supply chain and across the forestry sector. Data science, digital communication, decision making, automation and mechanisation are all within the scope of this exciting new portfolio. 

Emerging digital technologies are creating efficiencies and value-adding opportunities along the agricultural and forestry supply chain.  Digitisation also offers the opportunity to introduce new players to the existing industry, by providing digital services that improve productivity, mitigating risk and help build confidence in supply.  Digital technologies can also be used to add value, for instance, by delivering provide provenance for high value and indigenous timber products. The challenges are great; data ownership, data sovereignty and interoperability challenges will need to be addressed if the sector is to realise the full value from digital disruption.

Reporting to the GM Impact Area for Forests to Timber Products this role is vital to ensuring Scion achieves its strategic objectives and the successful candidate will be a leader of ambitious and innovative teams with a focus on collaboration and delivery of impact.

This role will suit someone with:

  • Proven leadership experience, a minimum of 10 years, including progressive work experience, including project management and/or product management. Or recognition through participation on national platforms, i.e. National Science Challenges.
  • Be a connector of researchers and industry, with strong academic and commercialisation experience.
  • Forestry background desirable, but not essential.  However, should be compelled by the opportunity that trees, forests and wood products can contribute to a sustainable circular bio-economy, environment and healthy rural communities
  • Driven by the disruption digitisation, mechanisation and automation can bring to this critical primary industry.
  • Extensive experience in managing projects and developing and/or working with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver to exceed expectations.
  • Significant experience and success with grant writing and fundraising.
  • Strong focus on outcomes and continuous improvement.
