Plant Biosecurity Technician

Part time role working 18.75hrs per week providing technical assistance to the research lead & team who address weed and biosecurity risks. 

Mō te tūka | The role

In this role you will provide technical assistance to Distinguished Professor Philip Hulme FRSNZ and his team of researchers in the Department of Pest Management and Conservation. 

Much of this work is based on big data and mining extensive data sets to explore key patterns in invasions.  The research is often part of high-profile international science programmes. 

Some tasks of the role include:

  • Undertaking comparative assessments of weed risks to NZ and overseas.
  • General data collation on biosecurity topics and summarisation - collate, edit, prepare, and check large datasets for subsequent detailed analysis.
  • General administrative support.

This is a permanent part time role working 18.75 hours per week (0.5 FTE) based at our Lincoln Campus.  The remuneration range is set at: $55,656 - $61,347 per annum (pro rata).

Kā tino Pūkeka/Whēako | Essential skills/experience for the role

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • or equivalent technical training/experience, majoring in, biology, ecology, or environmental science.
  • Background knowledge of plants and their ecology.
  • Knowledge of data handling and statistical analysis.
  • Proven ability to enter and manipulate data in spreadsheets and maintain databases.
  • Collate, quality control and manage datasets.
  • Evidence of preparing written reports that include data presentation.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in written form.
