Pathology Field and Laboratory Technician - Scion

The Scion Forest Protection team is looking for a Laboratory and Field Technician to support on a variety of forest pathology research trials.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support laboratory research trials by preparing detailed experimental work plans.
  • Establishing, maintaining and assessing trials either in the field or lab.
  • Collecting and preparing field samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Provide workplans, methods and materials and data from research trials for analysis and inclusion in reports and manuscripts.
  • Developing and undertaking specific pathology projects under general guidance.
  • Field and laboratory data collection and entry.
  • Maintenance and management of field and lab equipment.
  • General pathology-related laboratory tasks including pathogen isolations and other activities to support experiments as required.
  • Fieldwork will include overnight stays and travel driving on forestry roads.
  • Working with pesticides or pesticide-treated material might be required at times and full training for safe handling will be provided.

An ideal candidate will bring:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification (BSc or MSc, in Pathology, Biology, Plant Science or similar) or at least 2 years practical research experience in related field.
  • A practical approach with a passion to work outdoors; physically fit with an excellent aptitude to carry out field or glasshouse work that is at times complex, time constrained or physically demanding (e.g. measuring/assessing trees, collecting foliage samples, etc.).
  • Ability to carry out key pathology laboratory tasks including pathogen isolation and sub-culturing as well as preliminary identification of isolates using excellent sterile and/or isolation techniques.
  • At a personal level you must be innovative, self-motivated, with excellent communication skills and willing to work both independently and as part of a team.
