Te mahi/The role

Applications are invited for the position of Lecturer in Botany. We are seeking to appoint a dynamic teacher and researcher with energy and vision to pursue and engage in new opportunities that contribute to teaching and research in the Department of Botany.

The position affords the opportunity for interested scholars to teach and conduct research in a manner that is transformative and beneficial to Māori or Pacifica. Applicants are encouraged to identify the manner in which they will complement existing strengths in the Department and develop new and innovative directions in research and teaching. Applications from candidates with a background in any aspect of botany are strongly encouraged.

Through this appointment we intend to further enable the Department of Botany to strengthen its engagement and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the University of Otago’s MSF and PSF. The successful candidate will be an important part of our future plan to grow Māori and Pacifica academics within the Department.

The successful candidate will have:
•    A PhD with a research focus in any area of botany.
•    Demonstrated ability to work well with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds.
•    Demonstrated ability and passion for delivering high-quality teaching that will support and enhance the Department’s degree programme.
•    The ability to establish, develop and maintain an independent and on-going research programme with funding success.
•    Effective communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to create a collegial, supportive, and motivating environment for staff and students.
•    Commitment to and/or have established connections or track record of working with international and/or national researchers.
•    The ability and desire to participate in service within the department, the University and wider community.

Mō te tari/About the department

The Division of Sciences is one of the four teaching divisions in the University, the others being Health Sciences, Commerce, and Humanities. The Division of Sciences represents a broad range of disciplines in 15 Departments and a number of inter-disciplinary programmes.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding Pūkenga to join the Department of Botany at the University of Otago based in Ōtepoti Dunedin, Te Wai Pounamu South Island. We are the only Department of Botany in Aotearoa New Zealand and have a long history, being the first Department of Botany to be formed in this country.

Staff in the Department of Botany teach into a wide range of degree majors, including Botany, Ecology, Genetics, Plant Biotechnology, Agricultural Innovation, Marine Science and Oceanography. The Department of Botany is a research-active Department, with programmes spanning ecosystem science, plant functional biology, cell and molecular biology and taxonomy, with a strong emphasis on the ecology and evolution of New Zealand flora*, ecosystem processes and services, environmental change and resilience, physiological processes and plant-human interactions, including food (*‘flora’ defined broadly to include terrestrial and aquatic vascular and non-vascular plants, fungi, algae, cyanobacteria and plant viruses). The Department of Botany has a range of technical and analytical equipment, greenhouses, laboratory and field work facilities. We also have access to other university facilities, for example, the Otago Genomics Facility, and the Portobello Marine Laboratory and its associated research facilities, including a research vessel, which are based on Otago Harbour within the City and administered by the Department of Marine Science.

The University of Otago welcomes, supports and celebrates Māori and Pasifika staff and students. The Office of Māori Development provides guardianship over Māori matters at an organisation-wide level. The University has a Māori Staff Caucus known as Te Poutama Māori, a Pacific Academic Staff Caucus, a Māori student centre known as Te Huka Mātauraka and a Pacific Islands student support centre. Each division of the University has an Associate Dean (Māori) and networks of staff supporting Māori and Pasifika students.

Pūroko/Further details

This is a full-time (1.0), confirmation-path (tenure track) position at the level of Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant Professor in the North American system). However, a part-time or job-sharing position could be considered for the right candidate(s). The successful candidate is expected to take up duties by early 2024, however a start date in mid-2023 will also be considered. This role is located in Dunedin.
