Mechanical Design Engineer

In this role you will have an opportunity to innovate within a research environment.  You will contribute to research into moulded fibre packaging, as well as using your engineering expertise to develop new equipment and provide solutions to scientific challenges across other research areas.

At Scion, we specialise in research, science and technology development for the forestry industry, wood products and wood-derived materials. We lead new technology development for bioproducts and bioenergy and the establishment of a broader based bio-economy.

Reporting to the Team Lead of the Additive Manufacturing and Emerging Technologies team, you will be based in the multi-disciplinary team and work with people throughout Scion.  You will:

  • Use CAD to design parts and assemblies, and produce Technical Drawings
  • Develop equipment specifications and scope equipment options to provide procurement recommendations
  • Provide hands-on build and construction capability
  • Participate in the commissioning of equipment and methodically troubleshoot issues to resolve them
  • Write Technical Notes to document work that has been carried out
  • Contribute to other technical documentation
  • Use Scion's engineering workshop and 3D printing lab to make parts, when appropriate
  • Provide clear and timely communication to Project Leaders with regards to the status of project work
  • Support the delivery of projects through meeting deadlines
  • Undertake additional work as required

We are looking for a design engineer who is flexible and enthusiastic, and:

  • Whom enjoys problem solving and exhibits ingenuity
  • Is comfortable assembling simple mechanical equipment
  • Has a willingness to understand process equipment and P&ID's
  • Has the ability to work well as key member of a project team to successfully deliver projects
  • Is driven to learn new skills and expand expertise into new areas
  • Is adaptable and responsive to change in a research environment
  • Has excellent communication skills and can prioritise their workload effectively

Prerequisites for this role are a good understanding of mechanical equipment, and either a:

  • Tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering, or
  • Diploma/NZCE level qualification, or
  • Mechanical Trade background
