This is a rare opportunity for an exceptional individual to join the NIWA Vessels team and take command of a swing on our flag ship vessel RV Tangaroa, as Master. 

RV Tangaroa is a 70m purpose-built, ice-strengthened, SOLAS compliant research / survey vessel, with a crew of 16 and up to 26 technical / scientific staff. Tangaroa operates within the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone and further afield, including Antarctica.

Tangaroa is well equipped for New Zealand's environmental, survey and fisheries stock assessments. Tangaroa is a DP2 (DNV DynPOS AUTR) compliant vessel, that can deploy both scientific and commercial AUVs and ROVs.

What you will be doing:

This position reports to the General Manager - Vessel Operations and is responsible for the vessel's efficient operation, safety, personnel wellbeing, and pollution prevention to ensure voyage objectives are realised. As a member of the vessel management team, you will be a bridging liaison between the crew and shore support team.

What you will bring:

To be successful in this role you will be an experienced SOLAS compliant Master with 4+ years sea time in a Master role. You are an exceptional communicator and proven leader who understands the importance of excellent team dynamics and collaboration. Physical fitness, a positive outlook and operating under pressure are a standard issue of your repertoire. Offshore, commercial fishing and / or research vessel experience would be desirable. You are at home with the varying conditions of the sea and the undertaking of multi-week voyages.
