Mass Spectrometry Technician - NIWA

Updated: 7 months ago
Job Type: Permanent
Deadline: 26 Feb 2017

NIWA, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, is a leading environmental research institute and key provider of atmospheric, freshwater and marine research in New Zealand. Our mission is to conduct leading environmental science to enable the sustainable management of natural resources for New Zealand and the planet.

NIWA's Environmental Stable Isotope Analytical Facility enables scientific research within NIWA and the wider science community by providing high quality analyses for atmospheric, palaeo-climate, marine, freshwater and terrestrial research. We carry out C, N, S, O, H isotope measurements on organics, waters and gases using seven isotope ratio mass spectrometers (Thermo Scientific DeltaPlus , three Delta V Plus machines, MAT 252, 253, and an Isoprime) and multiple peripherals (elemental analysers, Gasbench II & Precon, GC-Isolink and Trace-GC Ultra, Kiel III and IV).

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled mass spectrometry technician to assist with the operation and analysis of environmental samples in our stable isotope analytical facility. The appointee will provide technical support for this facility, from instrument maintenance to sample analyses, including troubleshooting of issues affecting timely operation and the implementation of quality control systems. They will also assist in sample preparation, the development of new analytical techniques and methods, data processing and reporting.

Candidates should have a tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience, in science, laboratory technology or engineering. They should be experienced in running, maintaining and troubleshooting isotope ratio mass spectrometers and be familiar with safe laboratory practices and management. Experience in wet organic chemistry methods, and compound specific isotope analysis would be an advantage, but is not essential. Meticulous laboratory, analytical, computing and data management skills and good quality control practices are required. The position requires an ability to work in a team environment, to develop positive working relationships, to be adaptable, focussed, well-organised and solution-oriented.

NIWA offers competitive remuneration and benefits and an attractive waterfront location with free parking.
