What we're looking for:

A key focus of this position is the curation and management of data that underpin the sustainable management of New Zealand's resources. We seek a Data Manager to work from our marine and climate research focused, 300 strong, harbour-side Wellington campus to manage and maintain fisheries catch and effort, research, and observer databases under contract for the Ministry for Primary Industries / Fisheries New Zealand and ensure that Standards and Specifications are upheld. The position could be expanded, depending on the expertise and interests of the appointee, to include management of a range of NIWA environmental data. The position also includes leading and managing a group of science staff, taking responsibility for staff mentoring and career development, general staff management (including performance reviews) and supporting regional management.

What you will bring:

  • A tertiary level degree in a relevant discipline.
  • A strong data management background and database experience, preferably with biological and/or environmental data.
  • Well-developed database design skills
  • Well-developed skills in design and implementation of data quality standards
  • Experience with relational databases and Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Familiarity with Unix/Linux shell scripting
  • Experience with the Postgres relational database management system.
  • Proven people management skills and expertise
  • Familiarity with fisheries data and data management requirements would be an advantage
