The Lord Rutherford Memorial Research Fellowship was founded by Arthur Sims and Agnes Marion Sims who, in 1941, made provision of a fund of 10,000 pounds to establish a scholarship or scholarships to commemorate the late Baron Rutherford of Nelson, a former graduate of the University of Canterbury.
The scholarship is to support postgraduate research at an institution approved by the Academic Board.
- The fellowship shall be open to graduates of a University in New Zealand who were born in New Zealand or at the time of application have been resident in New Zealand for a period of seven years or more. The fellowship shall be awarded for outstanding merit and promise in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics or in any other cognate subject which the Academic Board may from time to time designate.
How do students apply?
Application forms are available approximately 8 weeks before applications close.
The election of the fellow shall be made by the Council on the recommendation of the Academic Board.
How and when do students learn of the decision?
The fellowship shall consist of a living allowance together with an annual grants to assist with tuition fees and a grant to assist with travel. The level of the grants will be dependent upon the income available and the current cost of fares and fees.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The fellow shall furnish at the end of each year's tenure of the fellowship a report upon his or her work from the Head of the Department or institution where he or she working. The fellow shall be devoted wholly to the work for which the fellowship was awarded and shall not accept any position of emolument without first obtaining the permission of the Academic Board. No other award may be held concurrently with the Lord Rutherford Memorial Research Fellow, except with the special permission of the Academic Board.
The Academic Board may approve tenure of the fellowship at an institution either overseas or in New Zealand.
Who else has information about this award?
Any part of the income from the endowment fund remaining unexpended for any reason may be directed by the Council to be added to the capital of the fund or, with the approval of the Academic Board, applied to either or both of the following purposes: a) the award of an additional fellowship; b) an extension of the period of tenure of the fellowship to a term not exceeding three years in all
