Āu Mahi | What You Will Do 
Te Kura Mahi ā-Hirikapo | School of Psychology, Speech and Hearing is seeking to fill a permanent, full-time Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant Professor in the North American System), Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Associate Professor in the North American system), post in the discipline of Psychology.

The successful candidate will be involved in leading, developing and delivering the teaching of research methods and statistics for psychology students in collaboration with staff already teaching into these areas. You will also contribute to the teaching of traditional core psychology subjects; we are especially seeking candidates who can add to our offerings by teaching in the areas of learning and behaviour, emotion, human factors, or health and wellbeing, but we will consider applicants with specialties in other areas as well.

Your research will complement the School's present research activities. You will also be encouraged to develop a strong, externally-funded research programme as well as be expected to collaborate with other academics in the School's teaching and research activities. The appointee will also be expected to develop links with and contribute to the wider psychology at local, national, and international levels.

Applicants should have a PhD in Psychology or related field. The successful candidate will have an ability and willingness to deliver high quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and a commitment to conducting world-class research in an area complementary to the current strengths within our School (especially in learning and behaviour, emotion, human factors, health and wellbeing). You will have a commitment to excellence in teaching of psychology at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, delivering effective teaching methods that enable a wide range of learners to succeed.

We encourage applications from accomplished and emerging researchers in psychology, with a strong record in teaching research methods and statistics for psychology students. We are looking for a colleague who is able and willing to work collaboratively with the team to continually develop research methods and statistics offerings at the University of Canterbury, including updating the current curriculum and exploring opportunities for collaboration across the School in curriculum development. The appointee will also demonstrate an interest in supervising final year undergraduate projects, Masters, and Ph.D. students, along with an interest in contributing to School, College, and University activities.

The essential selection criteria are: 

  • A PhD in Psychology.
  • Research and scholarship in a field relevant to Psychology, consistent with appointment at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer levels.
  • Experience in teaching undergraduate and/or post-graduate students.
  • Demonstrated ability and ongoing willingness to encourage, facilitate and supervise the research of Honours, Masters, and PhD student on topics related to your expertise in Psychology.
  • Demonstrated potential and willingness to generate external research income.
  • Demonstrated ability, or clear potential, to develop and lead innovative research programmes.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and/or willingness to learn about bicultural and multicultural issues in Aotearoa New Zealand society, including a commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi | The Treaty of Waitangi, and display a willingness to engage professionally with equity and diversity.
  • Demonstrated acceptable administration, and/or University and/or professional service contribution.
  • Māori and Pasifika candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.

The salary for this position is Lecturer (2.01 - $86,197) to Senior Lecturer (4.05 - $124,732).
