Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Interaction Design to join the School of Design Innovation. The position is responsible for teaching a design-led approach that produces positive human experiences at the interstice of design, engineering, business and user experience (UX), based on rigorous research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • On-going research activity
  • Academically rigorous teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Actively engage with industry, government, professions and diverse communities
  • Contribute to the collegial development of the major, School and Faculty in service roles

Ō pūmanawa - About you
You will be familiar with contemporary discourse in the field and possess a broad understanding of the value of Interaction Design in society and in culture, in New Zealand as well as internationally. The position calls for a strong professional portfolio, research or writing in interaction design, and experience teaching and working within interdisciplinary groups on successful, published projects. A specialisation and evidence in success in one or more of the following are preferred:

  • User experience (UX) design and methods,
  • Web and app design and development,
  • Design for healthcare,
  • Design entrepreneurship,
  • Interactive products,
  • Design for equity with priority populations

However, we are open to applications from a wide range of candidates that may contribute to researching and teaching in the area of Interaction Design.
An appreciation for the fundamental requirements and the interdisciplinary opportunities that Interaction Design offers to the discipline of design will help you thrive in this role. Your engagement with the digital capabilities required, Human-Centered-Research approaches as well as co-design methodologies will enable collaborations and a sharing of knowledge across the other relevant majors in the School of Design Innovation. A collaborative and open approach to teaching and learning will give you opportunities for growth and diversity. You will also encourage a collaborative and supportive environment.

Key Requirements:

  • A completed PhD in a relevant field or other relevant qualifications or industry experience commensurate with the seniority of this role.
  • An established track record in research publication and/or creative work.
  • Demonstrated evidence of a high standard of teaching in a relevant field at tertiary level or relevant industry experience.
  • Ability to work with students and staff from a diverse range of backgrounds.
