Āu Mahi | What You Will Do
Do you have a passion for and expertise in human geography? Applications are invited for a permanent position in Human Geography in the School of Earth and Environment | Te Kura Aronukurangi  at the Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level (equivalent to Assistant or Associate Professor in the North American system). We are looking for a colleague who will complement and augment the existing teaching, research and outreach activities of the School. The level of appointment will depend on the successful candidate's relevant experience.

In this position, you will be expected to make an innovative and engaging contribution to the Geography teaching programme , to develop a high quality programme of research , and to contribute to School administration. The successful candidate will be expected to teach into and help coordinate GEOG110 People, Places and Environments, and will contribute to a number of other human geography courses (e.g. GEOG217 Places for Wellbeing and Flourishing, GEOG351 Rethinking Development and GEOG401 Wellbeing, Community and Place). You will be encouraged to develop a strong, externally-funded research programme, and to collaborate with other academics in the School and across the University.

We are open to candidates with a range of research interests, but substantive knowledge of one or more of the following areas would be welcome: Urban and Community Wellbeing, the Global South, Community Development, Health and Wellbeing, Political Ecology, Community Economies, Māori and Indigenous geographies, and other related areas. We particularly encourage applications from individuals with expertise inqualitative research methods and the ability to engage with contemporary debates in Human Geography.

Mōu | Who You Are
Applicants should have a PhD in the field of human geography (or closely related area), an ability and willingness to deliver high quality teaching in human geography at an undergraduate and postgraduate level, and a commitment to undertake high quality research in an area complementary to current strengths within our School. 

You will demonstrate potential for academic excellence in teaching and research, be able to offer clear and engaging lectures and field classes from first year through postgraduate level, have experience of publishing your research in peer-reviewed fora and, where appropriate, of engaging with community stakeholders. We are looking for an adaptable and collaborative colleague who can work with others to embrace the opportunities that exist in a broad multi-disciplinary School. 

The School has a strong commitment to the University's Strategy for Māori Development and its Pasifika  strategy. We welcome applications from candidates with a knowledge of Te Ao Māori and te reo Māori and/or those with experience weaving Indigenous knowledge systems into their teaching and research. 

Preferred candidate attributes include the following:

  • A PhD in the field of human geography (or closely related area).
  • An undergraduate degree in geography (or closely related area).
  • Demonstrated ability, or clear potential, to develop and lead innovative research in human geography.
  • Record of research productivity.
  • Demonstrated potential and willingness to generate external research income.
  • Demonstrated ability or clear potential to be an excellent university-level teacher.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate and supervise the research of postgraduate students.
  • An understanding of and/or willingness to learn about bicultural and multicultural issues in Aotearoa New Zealand, including a commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Demonstrated acceptable administrative and/or University and/or professional service contributions.
