The Department of Mechanical Engineering within the School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences (SECMS) at AUT is seeking to appoint a permanent staff in either at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor position. Candidate should have a Ph.D. and a solid track record of teaching experience and research success in an area of Thermodynamics, Thermofluid Engineering, or Heat and Energy related fields in Mechanical Engineering.

The commencement date will be in May 2024 or by negotiation.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of four departments of the SECMS and currently has academic programmes in Mechanical and Mechatronics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with strong interests in Energy, Design, Materials and Manufacturing, Biomedical Engineering, System Dynamic and Control, Robotics and Mechatronics. Our programs are contemporary and popular, and we have built a reputation of excellence in teaching, research, and engagement with the wider community through the dedication and expertise of our staff. The School currently has over 2800 equivalent full-time students, about 110 permanent academic staff, and approximately 160 PhD students.

This position will involve conducting high-quality research, teaching, and developing academic programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A successful applicant will be expected to contribute to research and postgraduate supervision in one or more of the areas mentioned above through her/his specialist field and take a leading role in service and teaching. The salary level offered, and related workload conditions will be commensurate with the skills and experience of the successful applicant.

Selection Criteria

Lecturer in Thermodynamics

Essential

  • A PhD in Mechanical Engineering in a related field of Thermodynamics, Thermofluids, Energy, or Heat Transfer
  • Sound knowledge in energy, enthalpy, entropy, energy transfer, mass and energy balance, laws of thermodynamics, and the design principles of thermo-fluid systems
  • Strong ability to develop course contents including lab development, lecture and communicate complex and conceptual ideas to a wide range of students and various group sizes
  • Strong ability to adapt to a range of learning and teaching styles and employ diverse delivery techniques to inspire and engage students
  • Independent research experience and ability to undertake research in related areas through project supervision, publications, and, where relevant, associated scholarly activities
  • Communication and teamwork skills to foster a cooperative work culture both within and outside the school
  • Desirable

  • Ability to secure research funding, initiate projects, and develop partnerships with industry stakeholders
  • Ability and preparedness to participate in school-wide administrative duties.

    Senior Lecturer in Thermodynamics

    Essential

  • A PhD in Mechanical Engineering in a related field of Thermodynamics, Thermofluids, Energy, or Heat Transfer
  • Strong subject and curriculum knowledge in energy, enthalpy, entropy, energy transfer, mass and energy balance, laws of thermodynamics, and the design principles of thermo-fluid systems
  • Demonstrated ability to develop course contents including lab development, lecture and communicate complex and conceptual ideas to a wide range of students and various group sizes.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to a range of learning and teaching styles and employ diverse delivery techniques to inspire and engage students
  • Demonstrated research experience as evidenced by grant awards and undertaking research in related areas through research project development, supervision, publications, and where relevant, associated scholarly activities
  • High-level communication and teamwork skills to foster a cooperative work culture both within and outside the school
  • Desirable

  • Demonstrated ability to develop partnerships with industry and external bodies, develop projects and relevant courses, and secure research funding.
  • Demonstrated ability and preparedness to participate in school-wide administrative duties.

    Associate Professor in Thermodynamics

    Essential

  • A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in a related field of Thermodynamics, Thermofluids, Energy, or Heat Transfer
  • A record of distinguished academic achievement and research appropriate for appointment as an Associate Professor
  • Extensive subject matter experience and curriculum knowledge in thermodynamics, Thermofluids, energy, and the design principles of thermo-fluid systems and the relevant disciplines
  • Experience in pedagogical leadership and successfully developing contemporary and compelling courses/programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Demonstrated ability in teaching innovation such as adapting to a range of learning and teaching styles and employing diverse delivery techniques to a wide range of students and various group sizes
  • Proven capacity in research through successfully leading research teams, research project development, supervision, publications, securing external funding, and developing research capacity in your colleagues
  • Demonstrated high-level communication and interpersonal skills to foster a cooperative work culture both within and outside the school
  • Desirable

  • Significant experience in establishing effective and enduring partnerships with industry, government, professional groups and the wider community
  • Experience in staff management and leadership such as a Program Leader/Director or Division Head
  • Salary Range: 

    Lecturer - $85,000 - $101,000 (appointment level and salary commensurate with skills and experience)

    Senior Lecturer - $104,000 - $137,000 (appointment level and salary commensurate with skills and experience)

    Associate Professor - $137,000 - $159,000 (appointment level and salary commensurate with skills and experience)
