The Dunedin School of Medicine's Department of Pathology is a major teaching department for the Health Sciences Division at the University of Otago, including those in Medical Laboratory Science, Medicine and other accredited programmes. Since 1990, the Department of Pathology has played a key role in training Medical Laboratory Scientists for the profession. Our undergraduate students also include those studying medical, dental, physiotherapy, pharmacology, genetics, and science degrees.

The Department of Pathology has a strong and progressive research community committed to improving the diagnosis of human disease and the health of our community.

The role/Te mahi

Applications are invited for a full time, permanent (confirmation path/tenure track) Lecturer in Medical Laboratory Science within the Department of Pathology. We are looking for a qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist with professional experience working as a medical laboratory scientist, and be currently or previously registered with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand (or equivalent overseas registration authority). The position will involve teaching across different disciplines of the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science programme and other departmental programmes as required.

In this role you will work as part of the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science teaching team bringing professional expertise to the programme.

In addition, it is expected that you will be research active, either independently or as part of an existing research group in the Pathology Department. This role has an approximate 40% teaching, 40% research and 20% administration split.

Skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

The successful candidate will ideally be a qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist with an interest in teaching and research. You will also have:
•    A Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, a postgraduate qualification in Medical Laboratory Science or related discipline or an intention to undertake postgraduate study, and/or have equivalent experience in the field.
•    Professional experience working as a medical laboratory scientist and be currently or previously registered with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand.
•    Knowledge of the practical aspects of at least one discipline taught in the Medical Laboratory Science programme.
•    Excellent communication skills.
•    Previous teaching experience is desirable.
•    Strong commitment to developing collaborative working relationships with colleagues.
