Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Lecturer of Design (Teaching) in Design Research and First Year, to join the School of Design Innovation. The position is responsible for contributing to the teaching of fundamental design pedagogy, design history that includes how Aotearoa is positioned within this and design research methodologies that enhance interdisciplinary engagement, co-design, and collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Academically rigorous teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Contributing to the review and enhancement of programmes and courses.
  • Develop relationships across the eight majors to establish interdisciplinarity and strategic use of drawing skills.
  • Contribute to the collegial development of the major, School and Faculty in service roles, specifically those that enhance the student experience.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

You are passionate about teaching and learning and appreciate the importance of Ako to this environment as well as the Māori Strategic Outcomes Framework, Mai i te Iho ki te Pae. You will be familiar with the varied approaches to design research and possess a broad understanding of the value diversity brings to design. A specialisation and evidence of success in one or more of the following is preferred:

  • Design research methods
  • Design’s histories
  • Foundational principles and skills of design

However, we are open to applications from a wide range of candidates that may contribute to researching and teaching within the core deliverables of the BDI

An appreciation for the value of interdisciplinary approaches to design research offered through co-design and human or planet-centric approaches to design will help you thrive in this role. Your engagement with these methodologies will enable collaborations and a sharing of knowledge across all the majors within the School of Design Innovation. A collaborative and open approach to teaching and learning will give you opportunities for growth and diversity and encourage a rewarding and supportive environment for our students and staff alike.
