Position Overview

With a legacy of over a century in design education, Massey University’s Ngā Pae Māhutonga - the Wellington School of Design is recognised as an Asia-Pacific leader in higher education for design, producing world-class research and educating practitioners across a broad spectrum of design approaches.

Ngā Pae Māhutonga educates students to be socially and culturally engaged global citizens, contributing to their communities with imaginative, collaborative, and unconventional approaches to some of the most pressing challenges facing the world today.

The School seeks to appoint a full-time permanent teaching-focused Lecturer position in the subject area of Concept Design. Concept Design at Ngā Pae Māhutonga describes the act of visualisation employed for conceptualising, envisioning, and prototyping an idea for use in film, television, games, performance, and interactive experiences.

Concept designers utilise traditional and digital forms of drawing, painting, and sculpting to generate visual design for an item, character, or environment that does not yet exist. The scale of their outputs ranges from individual characters, creatures, props, settings, and costumes to the comprehensive thematic world-building required for the pre-production of feature films, theme parks, events, exhibits, and location-based experiences.

The successful candidate should have a demonstrated track record of professional activity and performance appropriate to the level of appointment, possess competence in multiple modes and mediums of teaching, and be a clear, confident, and skilled classroom presenter. We are in particular seeking a candidate with strong 3D skills, in particular digital software Maya, Zbrush and physical sculpture or object fabrication.

This role has a strong focus on teaching, and the candidate will be expected to teach across Undergraduate and Postgraduate offerings and demonstrate a commitment to service in the form of administration and committee participation and will be required to take on different roles and responsibilities within the School of Design as needed.

An open, collaborative approach and willingness to work across areas and departments of the school, college and university is a priority.

All applications should include a full Curriculum Vitae, five sample creative works, and the names of two referees (with full contact details).

Enquiries may be addressed to Tanya Marriott, Subject Leader of Concept Design, at [email protected]Only applications submitted via the online portal will be accepted.
