An opportunity has arisen for a Laboratory Technician to join our Pathogen Diagnostics and Collections team, based in Rotorua. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing laboratory and some field-based technical support to our diagnostics service, NZFS culture collection, and pathology research projects.

You will work closely with diagnosticians, researchers and other technicians, working within our diagnostic laboratory and culture collection to meet project deliverables. This role will also provide technical support to our third-party stakeholders assisting with their diagnostic needs.

This is an exciting opportunity   to join a multi-disciplinary team who are committed to making a difference for forestry within New Zealand.  If you have a minimum capability to perform at NZQF Level 5/6 or an equivalent qualification with at least 1 - 2 years practical laboratory experience, this may be the role you are waiting for!

You will need:

  • Prior experience in a microbiology laboratory, handling and preparing samples for processing is required. Experience with sample accessioning will be beneficial.
  • The ability to carry out basic pathology laboratory work, including media preparation, soil baiting, fungal isolation and sub-culturing is preferred.
  • Experience in sample collection and undertaking disease assessments in the laboratory or field environment is beneficial.
  • Clear and legible handwriting, with basic familiarity with Microsoft Word/Excel/Outlook products or equivalents is preferred, with training provided as necessary.
