Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting Laboratory Coordinator – Small Animal Facility to join the School of Biological Sciences on a fixed term contract until May 24, 2024.

The role will be responsible for technical support within the Small Animal Facility. As well as developing and maintaining excellent working relationships with technical and administrative staff, academic staff, postgraduate students, visitors, and other university staff and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facility Operation, animal maintenance functions, welfare checks and husbandry conditions, ensuring adherence to workflow patterns, PC2 and facility requirements.
  • Operating facility equipment including autoclaves, cage washer, bedding dispenser, change stations etc.
  • Stocktaking, ordering, and receipting of facility consumables.
  • Completing sentinel testing tasks to schedule.
  • Ensuring compliance with ethics and facility operational requirements.
  • Oversight of breeding colonies in the facility.
  • Welfare monitoring and compliance.
  • Animal records maintained on facility software.

You will be responsive and collaborative working with staff and students. This is a very rewarding role and requires the ability to work independently and with a team.

Key Requirements:

  • 1+ years working in a technical role in a small animal facility.
  • Further practical experience gained in either a scientific or commercial research organisation or during a course of study.
  • Proven ability to work independently to tight timeframes.
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills with proven ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Proven problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of a range of computer software.
  • Flexibility of working hours as required on weekends and public holidays.
  • Ability to do heavy lifting of up to 20kg.
