Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting for a qualified and experienced Occupational Therapist, Mental Health Nurse, or a Mental Health professional, to join our passionate and motivated team. Mauri Ora – Student Health and Counselling is seeking an experienced mental health clinician to join our team on a full-time, fixed-term contract. This exciting opportunity is to be a part of our Counselling Team and provide short-term and same day counselling to university students, as well as outreach and triage support.

The Student Counselling Service works in a holistic and collaborative manner with our medical and nursing team, and other Students Services including Pasifika Student Support, Awhina, Disability Services, Student Learning, Wellington International and Student Interest and Conflict Resolution.

You must have the following:

Selection criteria – essential

  • Be a fully registered member of a relevant professional board or organisation in New Zealand and hold a current practicing certificate.
  • University Degree or Post graduate qualification in a mental health or counselling related discipline.
  • Experience in providing solution focused, brief / time limited models of counselling or therapy. Experience with clinical triage, need assessment and outreach.
  • Experience in risk assessment and crisis intervention.
  • Proven/demonstrated experience supporting people from a range of backgrounds and cultures, particularly young adults.
  • Proven understanding of issues relating to late adolescence and early adulthood.
  • Experience and interest in working in a culturally safe approach with Māori and Pasifika students and applying cultural models of wellbeing.
  • Proven ability to counsel using an approach that is non-judgemental, flexible, empathic, and sensitive to cultural, religious differences, gender, and sexual orientation.
  • Ability to work in a flexible manner across different campus locations.

Selection criteria – desirable

  • Understanding of the Pastoral Care Code and responsibilities.
  • Knowledge and experience in the university / tertiary education sector.
  • Knowledge of the support and developmental needs of university students and of equity issues.
  • Familiarity with client record software and Microsoft Suite.
