Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

This is an awesome opportunity to become the inaugural Kaiurungi for our People & Culture (P&C) Division. This pivotal greenfields role works closely with P&C staff and the University's senior leaders to embed and enact Te Aronui (AUT's Te Tiriti Framework) in all its activities, and in the workforce priorities of Te Kete (AUT's new strategy to 2030).

The University's leadership is genuine in its deep support for Te Tiriti. You will navigate and work effectively with all parts of AUT to enable People and Culture to enact Te Aronui as it relates to its mahi. People and Culture is a fantastic team to be part of and we're hugely excited to be entering this next phase of our Te Tiriti journey! The Kaiurungi will report directly to our Group Director People & Culture and be a member of the People and Culture Leadership Team.

In this highly visible position, you'll develop strategy and operationalise initiatives and projects which will impact the entire AUT employee experience. Key focus areas include:

  • Lead the building of Māori cultural capability uplift to our P&C team, in aspects such as te reo Māori, te ao Māori, mātauranga Māori, tikanga and more.
  • Ensure Te Aronui is embedded in P&C's business-as-usual activities and Māori are proactively considered during the design, development and implementation of P&C initiatives, programmes, policies and practices.
  • Partner extensively with leaders across AUT, particularly with our Tiriti Strategist (kaiārahi for Te Aronui).
  • Provide support to enhance the wellbeing, participation, success and equitable outcomes of Māori staff.

He kōrero mōu | About you

You will enjoy building a role from the ground up and be motivated by the potential it has to make such a difference to others. You will bring in-depth knowledge and lived experience of te Ao Māori, tikanga, te reo Māori and of Māori approaches which will enable you to inform P&C initiatives, programmes, policies and practices. Knowledge of HR practices is preferred. Alternatively, prior experience embedding tikanga into an organisation's policies, processes and systems in sectors/divisions such as legal, strategy or facilities management could also align well.

Your ability to listen, connect, collaborate, communicate and influence will be critical. You will naturally enable 'safe spaces' for staff to explore, learn, make mistakes and ask questions as staff embark on their Te Tiriti journeys. You will have a strong respect for others coupled with an open and engaging attitude that is flexible to changing requirements. A resolute, robust and positive attitude is essential.

  • Experience providing cultural advisory support and embedding Māori practices and values into an organisations processes, policies and systems. Knowledge of HR practices (or similar) is preferred.
  • Proficient speaker of te reo. Fluency is highly desirable.
  • Cultural expertise including Te ao Māori lived experience, a working knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and experience with teina/tuakana relationships.
  • Experience of working with Māori stakeholders - mana whenua, iwi, enterprises or community groups.
  • Experience and understanding of equity and diversity issues in New Zealand, especially with relation to Māori staff.
  • A successful track record of working and engaging collaboratively with colleagues at all levels across an organisation to lead and deliver organisation culture change, induction and staff engagement.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills.
