Creative New Zealand/New Zealand School of Music (NZSM) Jazz Composer-in-Residence 2024

The Creative New Zealand/NZSM Jazz Composer-in-Residence 2024 is a 6-month position for established jazz composers to develop a body of work leading towards the creation of a new album. The position is jointly funded by Creative New Zealand and the NZSM Composer-in-Residence Endowment Fund, with the NZSM acting as host organisation.

This position fosters and expands jazz composition in Aotearoa by providing leading artists with the opportunity to develop innovative and substantial work. It is expected that the appointee will be based in Wellington for the duration of the residency, and it is hope that the appointee will work with NZSM staff to record their work either during or shortly after the completion of their residency.

As there is no accommodation provided with this residency, an out-of-town accommodation supplement of $300 p/w can be paid on provision of proof of normal residency being outside Wellington.

Applicants should be New Zealand citizens or hold a valid New Zealand residency visa. Applicants may not be a student or staff member of the New Zealand School of Music during the period of the residency. Applicants should not intend to engage in other substantial external employment contracts or study during the period of the residency.

The selection committee will comprise at least 3 members of the staff of the NZSM, plus one external expert. The committee will base their decision on the artistic standards and track record of the applicant, as evidenced through a CV and portfolio of representative works, as well as the potential of the proposed work, both in terms of its artistic vision and its engagement with the jazz community in Wellington and beyond.
