We are looking for a Field Technician keen to join our multi-disciplinary Biometrics team who are champions of science excellence and innovation. A person who is eager to contribute to the research and development of activities which contribute to science that really makes a difference to the New Zealand forestry industry 

Who are we? 

Scion is a Crown Research Institute who specialises in research, science and technology development for the forestry industry, wood products, and wood-derived materials. We lead new technology development for renewables, bioproducts and energy and the establishment of a broader based bioeconomy.

What does the role entail?

Reporting to the Team Leader, you will:

Assist with field crew work to meet project deliverables which will include duties such as tree measurement for permanent sample plots, soil, genetic and plant pest/disease sampling, wood properties sampling and individual tree form analysis and maintenance

What are we looking for?

  • A Technician with a NZQF qualification (level 4 or 5) in forestry or a related discipline.
  • A practical hands-on approach to work with a good level of fitness and perseverance to carry out field work that at times can be physically demanding
  • A willingness to work with herbicides and pesticides, and to undertake necessary training to become a certified chemical handler.
  • Experience and confidence to drive on forestry roads, with experience in forest operations would be highly desirable.
  • A willingness to obtain chainsaw and first aid certificates
  • Experience with sensors and/or remote sensing or its potential applications preferred, with training provided as necessary.
  • Travel from Rotorua with some overnight stays as required
