We are seeking a talented entomology technician with a high level of independence, initiative, and excellent attention to detail to work alongside scientists, curators, and technical staff in the New Zealand Arthropod Collection.
About the opportunity
The main purpose of this role is to provide specialist diagnostics for invertebrates (chiefly insects) for: 1) supporting research projects, 2) outreach to the public, and 3) in response to requests from endusers (e.g. MPI, DOC, CRIs).
You will also significantly contribute to curation and collection management activities, and be an integral part of NZAC digitisation work, including data entry, mass digitisation, and using collection management software.
This position is permanent, full time, and based at our Auckland site.
About you
You will possess a tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline, and have a strong knowledge of natural sciences, particularly entomology, invertebrate zoology, taxonomy, and systematics. Experience working in a museum, science institution, or other collection-based institution would be beneficial.
You will have experience in :
- Identifying a wide range of insect taxa at both a basic level (Order, Family) but also to lower taxonomic levels when required
- Preparing specimens for identification (e.g., dissection, pinning, slide mounting)
- Creating and developing resources to aid diagnostics for internal staff, endusers, and the public
- Digitising specimens through data entry and transcription of labels (e.g., data capture of locality, date)
- Creating new database records within a collection management system and enhancing existing records by adding associated metadata (e.g. geo-references, historical documents, DNA sequences, permits, and images).
We are looking for someone who is open to learning new skills and who has a flexible attitude in the type of day-day tasks that need to be carried out. A proven ability to organise, prioritise, and manage multiple projects, whilst having an excellent attention to detail is essential.
