Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting an Engineer on a permanent, full-time contract. We are seeking a qualified and highly motivated Engineer with ambition to develop their research career within an academic R&D environment and the ability to conceptualise and originate new ideas that are outside industry norms. Unlike many traditional academic roles Paihau – Robinson Research Institute work closely with commercial partners and carry out mission-oriented R&D and you should have the desire to see your work implemented with partners.

This role requires the design, and construction, of fixtures, and experimental assemblies within extreme cryogenic environments and integration of sensing and control systems. It is expected that you will solve integration of systems and sensing instruments into commercial applications and engage with external partners with interests in commercialising technology arising from Paihau - Robinson. The work on the development of prototype superconducting machines and manufacturing systems is aimed at sustainable lower carbon futures that include clean fusion energy, electrification of aviation and clean electric propulsion for space.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

Preferred candidate will have:

  • A postgraduate qualification in a relevant field.
  • Excellent technical skills including experience in:
    • Mechanical design using solid works (or similar CAD package).
    • Mechanical and electrical prototyping, instrumentation, or manufacturing process design.
  • 5+ years’ experience in Industry or research environments.
  • Engineering for cryogenic environments.
  • Scientific programming and control using Matlab.
  • Excellent oral written communication skills.
  • Practical implementation skills.
  • Strong team player able to work closely with collaborators from multiple partner organisations.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced environment alongside other high-performing researchers.
