Kōrero mō te tῡranga – About the Role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Director, Research Office. Reporting to the Vice-Provost Research the Director, Research Office is a pivotal role at the University that supports and enables the capability and performance of research at the University . Through collaboration with key stakeholders the goals of this role and the team it manages are to diversify and increase research income and innovation, leverage exciting research opportunities such as Horizon Europe , enable kaupapa Māori and mātauranga Māori research, support the development of researchers, and oversee the continuous improvement to research services and systems.

As well as being responsible for these ambitious and transformative programmes this role leads a dedicated team of professional staff and is responsible for translating the vision and strategy into an operating and capability plan that delivers measurable outcomes.

Key responsibilities:

  • Increase the international standing of the University for research.
  • Initiate and promote opportunities for the Research Office to engage with, and experience ngā tikanga Māori and te reo Māori.
  • Develop and implement an ambitious service and support strategy that enables our research community.

Ō pῡmanawa – About You

You are an experienced people leader who understands and can navigate the research sector working collaboratively across organisational boundaries. You may have experience in the University sector with or at Crown Research Institutes, independent research bodies, or in related government departments where income growth and diversification as well as innovation have been demonstrated.

Your knowledge of kaupapa Māori and mātauranga Māori research means you have the skills necessary to ensure the University realises its opportunities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi to provide an operating environment and experience that facilitates meaningful research partnerships and networks with all stakeholders.

You are outcome focussed and understand the services researchers need to succeed and how to deliver them. Analytically minded, experience focussed, and financially astute, you can see the big picture whilst ensuring core systems and processes are in place to enable ambitious targets to be met. Your leadership experience means you can galvanise teams and influence senior colleagues to achieve tangible results, both financial and non-financial.
