Position Overview
The companion animal rotating internship at Massey University is a 12.5-month clinical program providing advanced clinical training in medicine, surgery, emergency and critical care, and other specialties on an elective basis in an AVMA-accredited Companion Animal Teaching Hospital.
We invite your expression of interest or application.
The program will provide the individual with a strong background in companion animal general, emergency, and speciality practice. The program is designed to qualify the individual for entry into an approved residency program, speciality internship or upskill for general practice.
Under the direct guidance and supervision of senior faculty members, each intern will work in the internal medicine, surgery and anaesthesia departments, with the remainder spent in emergency and critical care (both with direct and indirect supervision). During emergency duty, time is spent on day or night-time services. Each intern will be responsible for both referral and walk-in emergency cases with the support of the emergency and critical care specialists, emergency doctors as well as other speciality service residents and faculty clinicians on-call. The intern will also be expected to help manage critical cases in the small animal intensive care unit.
Presentation of one 50-minute seminar to an audience of faculty, house officers, and students is required. Participation in a research project and submission of manuscripts to a scientific journal is strongly recommended but not required. Interns are expected to attend weekly one-hour specifically-tailored lectures and participate in journal and book club activities on a regular basis. Additionally, they will present cases, along with residents during the biweekly multidisciplinary rounds. Interns are also expected to participate in the instruction of final year veterinary students.
Interns will be assigned a mentor who provides guidance and serves as a liaison throughout the program. A certificate will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of the program.
We are looking for veterinarians who will enjoy the challenge of providing advanced diagnostic and treatment skills within an exciting, friendly, vibrant hospital environment. New graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Overseas candidates must be eligible for NZVC registration and NZ work visa.
- Full and current driver's license.
- Your application will be assessed as you apply.
