Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the Role:
This Chief Financial Officer (CFO) role sits within Te Hiwa – the senior leadership team (SLT). The purpose of the role is to work with the SLT to together develop the financially resilient and sustainable journey of the University.
The role is fast-paced and requires accurate data analysis and options with a quick turnaround, excellence in communication of complex information, and depth of strategic thought. The role is not an advisor to the SLT – it is a fully-participative and integrated member of the Te Hiwa team. The role is to be an excellent communicator and conduit with the Council and Finance Committee.
The CFO will lead the Finance Group with a pragmatic and solutions-focussed culture which is supportive of the Finance team, reflective of the issues that arise operationally, and confident to bring change to processes and policies where they are needed.
The role will have a deep appreciation of the academic foundations of a University and will work with a positive and constructive style with faculty and management staff alike.
The role supports the work of the Chief Operating Officer, who leads the review and reshaping of the operating model of the University.
This role has a critical relationship with the Tertiary Education Commission Te Amorangi Mātauranga Matua, and with the CFO working group of the sector body, Universities New Zealand - Te Pōkai Tara

To be successful in this role you will be a CFO with a significant track record of working in a complex organisation and a demonstrable ability to support broad transformation that will create in a fit-for-future organisation.
As well as excellence in your modelling of financial data at pace:
- You will be as competent in telling the story from the data and projecting forward options based on it.
- You will be a person who values accuracy, simplicity, pragmatism and with a deep customer service ethic.
- You will demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively with your peers, academic staff, University management and governance, and a range of stakeholders.
- You will also have a track record of successfully implementing change to deliver results.
- You will be a person who has integrity and resilience, and a warm and welcoming style.
Overall, you will be passionate about tertiary education and what the University can do to develop New Zealand’s best and brightest and contribute to an environment where they can learn and flourish in a fast-changing world.
