The opportunity / Te Whiwhinga mahi
We are looking for a cafe chef to oversee our popular onsite cafe on the Marlborough Campus in Budge Street. This is 30 hours per week position, for 6 months fixed term, Feb to August 2023, to cover for our staff member who will be on parental leave. A great place for students, visitors and staff to unwind, our Cafe is open daily and offers great coffee, hot and cold snacks and meals at student friendly prices.
Our Marlborough Campus is home to over 25 programmes, many of which have been created to support local industry. Be inspired by our beautiful historic notable Gingko tree to promote our cafe far and wide.
Join our friendly and dedicated staff across the Marlborough Campus. This role works closely with the food and production catering staff on the Nelson Campus for the best in food, beverage and inventory optimisation. The cafe is open school hours so no early mornings and late starts.
This role will be responsible for (but limited to):
- Daily preparation and service requirements for Campus Cafe and regional event catering,
- Customer service, the personality that builds strong relationships with a wide range of customers.
- Ensuring service standards are met for food preparation, customer services, hygiene maintenance and meeting budgetary targets,
- Cash and inventory management, and
- Maintaining a seasonal approach in all food and beverage production, with a focus on sourcing local produce and/or suppliers wherever possible.

- who would enjoy working alongside the local industry groups such as Wine Marlborough, Plant and Food and the Marlborough Research Centre providing event catering,
- to inspire and mentor our hospitality students in during their practical training,
- to promote and grow the business, encouraging more of the locals to make this cafe a 'local' destination.
To be successful in this role you will need experience and a cookery / hospitality qualification with the ability to plan and prepare food and beverages for daily operations of the campus café. In addition you will have:
- Food preparation and display skills,
- Outstanding coffee making skills,
- Sound budgeting, menu planning and costing skills,
- A working understanding of relevant legislative Food Safety and Hygiene, Food Control Plans, and health and safety practice,
- The ability to work independently, display initiative, and exercise judgement,
- Proven inventory management and product ordering skills.
