Bioprocess Engineer

Full time position - 40 hours

Based in Rotorua, New Zealand. 

Scion specialises in research, science and technology development for the forestry industry, wood products and wood-derived materials. We lead new technology development for renewables, bioproducts, and energy, and the establishment of a broader based bioeconomy. We are a Crown Research Institute dedicated to forestry and is home to more than 300 science and support staff on its two main campuses in Rotorua and Christchurch. You will be part of a team that is an integral part in delivering Scion's bioenergy and biotechnology research which is a key part Scion's Forests to Bio-based Products Impact Area

An exciting opportunity exits at Scion for a Bioprocess Engineer to contribute their bioprocess engineering expertise and support Scion's research. Based in Rotorua and reporting to the Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering Team Lead within our Materials, Engineering & Manufacturing group, you will:

  • Assist with the translation of biotechnology to industrial products
  • Support early stage industries in NZ
  • Contribute to current research projects in areas including but not limited to biogas and biohydrogen generation, photosynthesis methane absorption, biofuel production, plastic depolymerization and fermentation 
  • Contribute to funding proposals and scientific papers
  • Work across our Forests to Bio-based Products Impact Area portfolios

 What you'll need to succeed:

  • Masters degree or PhD in related area of science such as engineering
  • Expertise in bioprocess design, evaluation, optimisation and safety
  • Knowledge of general process safety techniques and practice such as HAZOP and/or LOPA
  • Enthusiastic and innovative approach to science tasks; self-starter with ability to work independently on tasks or as part of a team.
  • An ability to work well with end-users and stakeholders in the planning and delivery of assigned tasks.

Desirable skills:

  • Experience and knowledge commercial activities in bioenergy and biotechnology
  • Experience of mentoring junior staff
  • Experience and knowledge of NZ science funding system
