The Foundation’s purpose is to improve the health of New Zealanders through funding the highest quality medical research of all kinds.

The Foundation aims to encourage greater clinical research whilst maintaining its support for biomedical research.

Selection criteria:
  • Applications are open to appropriately qualified individuals with New Zealand residency, permanent residency or citizenship, who hold a doctoral degree of not more than five years standing (at annual decision date which is November), irrespective of the University from which their PhD was conferred.

How do students apply?
Log into the AMRF Portal at and create a new application. Ensure all the required details are entered and all necessary documents have been attached. The application can then be submitted by clicking on the submit button. Applications should be submitted by the applicant personally and include written support of the research group/department hosting the research (uploaded as a supporting document). This support presupposes that the research group/department will provide the working expenses and the facilities essential to the research project. The Fellows will be recognised as an employee of the host institution which will administer the Fellowships. When you write your application, please remember that your research proposal will be reviewed by both discipline-specific referees and also by members of the Medical Committee with a broad range of experience in health research. Please structure your proposal in a clear and succinct way and if possible seek feedback from a colleague outside your immediate research area.

Additional information
Value: The salary will be the equivalent to the appropriate level of the non-medical lecturers scale at the University of Auckland. The Foundation will provide a contribution towards working expenses of $5,000 per annum. In addition, during the term of the Fellowship there is provision for one award of up to $5,000 to assist with conference travel expenses. If required the Foundation can provide up to $4,000 for relocation expenses.
