Who we are

The Bioethics Centre is a locus of excellent research, teaching and discussion in bioethics, which brings together staff and students from a range of academic disciplines and professional backgrounds. Established in 1988 the Bioethics Centre at the University of Otago was founded in response to growing awareness of new ethical issues relating to law, medicine and technology; issues which touch the lives of everyone. Our aim is to conduct and co-ordinate teaching and research, to stimulate informed public debate, and to provide a consultation and resource service for health professionals and others in the community.

The role

The Assistant Research Fellow will provide research support and assistance on the Precision Antimicrobials: Targeted Therapeutics for Food and Companion Animal Infections research project. This research is focused on developing and applying an ethical framework for assessing the development and use of animal-only antimicrobials. Alongside this will be an analysis of the social license of animal-specific antimicrobials among stakeholder groups.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:
• Recruiting research participants including conducting focus groups and interviews with research participants.
• Preparation of ethics applications and associated documentation such as the study protocol.
• Data management including data entry, overseeing accurate collection of data, ensuring integrity of data, data analysis.
• Drafting of research report manuscripts for publication in collaboration with the investigators.

Your skills and experience

• Experience in conducting qualitative data analysis, including reviewing and coding interview transcripts.
• Experience with qualitative data analysis software.
• Computer literacy particularly in data management and analysis.
• Research management experience. Trial management experience would be beneficial.
• Data management experience.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Preferably with a publication track record.
• Attention to details and accuracy.
• Ability to prioritise and keep track of work as well as establishing and maintaining relevant and accurate records.
• An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
• Self-starter, who can work independently and as part of a team.

This is a part-time (0.5FTE), fixed term position available from February 2020 to October 2024.
