•    Training provided with the opportunity to pursue a career in animal care.
•    Part-time (0.5FTE) or part-time job share (0.25FTE each, working alternating weeks).
•    Hours of work are Saturday and Sunday, and 2 hours on Monday and Friday, respectively.

Te mahi / The Role

We are looking for two Assistant Animal Care Technicians to join our new Biomedical Research Facility. In this role, you will be responsible for animal husbandry and on-going care for a range of animals.

You will be responsible for maintaining and managing breeding colonies of animals in specific pathogen free conditions. Owing to the clean and sterile nature of the facility, you will also be responsible for cage and room sanitisation as well as the operation of autoclaves.

You will have the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of research projects, utilising your veterinary care skills and the interest you have for caring for, and working with animals.

Full training will be provided but, ideally you will hold a Veterinary Care qualification or have previous similar experience working with animals. You will be the type of person that loves to work with various animal species and ensure they receive an on-going level of comfort while in the care of our facility.

Other important attributes include:
•    Familiarity with computer systems.
•    Ability to maintain accurate and reliable records.
•    Good inter-personal relationship skills and the ability to communicate with people from many diverse backgrounds.
•    Reasonable level of fitness as the work requires lifting.
•    As this role will involve working alone at times, a high degree of responsibility and integrity is required.

Biomedical Research Facilities hold and supply laboratory and large animals for research. Our specific team is a group of animal care professionals, committed to the on-going welfare of animals within our care.

We provide technical support, training, and expertise to a variety of units and departments across all the University's campuses. We are an approved Ministry of Primary Industries, and New Zealand Government, Transitional Containment and Quarantine Facility.

Pūroko / Further details

This role is available as either one 0.5 FTE position, or two 0.25 FTE positions, working a week on / week off roster. You will also be required to work some statutory holidays.

The specific roster is below:

Monday – 2 hours at a time to be agreed
Friday - 2 hours at a time to be agreed
Saturday – 7.5 hours (8am – 4pm)
Sunday – 7.5 hours (8am – 4pm)
