Our purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's aquatic resources and environments, to provide an understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve the safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced aquatic ecology technician for a permanent position in our Hamilton office to support a range of largely freshwater projects. The position will mainly provide technical support for research and consultancy work focused on aquatic plant ecology but with the expectation that you would also work across a range of other freshwater and marine areas as required. Key tasks will include but not be limited to:

  • Carrying out field work including scuba and snorkel diving and skippering small boats
  • Carrying out underwater vegetation surveys
  • Invertebrate and freshwater fish sampling
  • Use of specialised environmental monitoring instruments
  • Data collation, analysis and archiving
  • Database curation
  • Report and scientific paper writing
  • Proposal preparation and project management of small to medium-sized projects

You will need to have qualifications in an ecological science or a related field and several years' relevant experience working in an environmental management or science role. You must have diving and boating experience and preferably be familiar with aquatic plant identification and surveying. Experience in freshwater invertebrate and fish sampling, including electric fishing, would be an advantage as would familiarity with environmental monitoring instrumentation. You will need to be able to work flexible hours and undertake field trips lasting several days away from Hamilton.
