The opportunity / Te Whiwhinga mahi

We are looking for Aquaculture technicians to work part time in our Aquaculture Facilities at our Nelson Campus and at Glenhaven. This exciting opportunity might appeal to current students or graduates.

This curriculum area is renowned for quality and excellence and offers a range of aquaculture courses from sustainable aquaculture certificates to post graduate research qualifications. We have purpose-built teaching spaces including fish and shellfish hatchery and rearing facilities and three recirculating production systems for our students (ākonga).

We need technical support to ensure we continue to present excellent aquaculture facilities and support to training and research opportunities for our ākonga and tutors (kaimahi).

The key responsibilities for these permanent roles are:

  • Feeding of animals, cleaning system(s) and any maintenance work.
  • Monitoring of animal welfare
  • Assist with keeping any aquatic plants/animals - feeding, cleaning, water quality, monitoring etc.

Hours available:

  • Up to 16 hours per week.
  • Must be able to work at least 2 weekends per month.
  • Weekend work requirement is only 3 hours per day 9-12pm Saturdays and Sundays to undertake feeding, cleaning, and monitoring of animal welfare. 
  • During the week the rostered hours are more flexible and would also involve some lab preparation. 
  • Hours are rostered at least two weeks in advance to cover weekdays, public holidays, and weekends to ensure the welfare of our animals.

About you / He kōrero mōu

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • An understanding of aquaculture principals 
  • Aquatic animal husbandry experience,
  • Technical hands-on skills with aquaculture systems,
  • A good rapport with ākonga,
  • Be a positive team member who conveys enthusiasm, takes initiative and is willing to use their experience and expertise to inspire.

It is desirable (but not essential) that you have:

  • A relevant aquaculture or marine science qualification or equivalent,
  • Laboratory experience (training provided)
  • Understanding of: System Design, Aeration, Filtration (Biological & Mechanical), Feeding, Oxygen & Ozone, Sterilisation, Pumps, Waster Water Management, Water Hydrodynamics & Piping Systems, Sensors & Alarm Systems, Electrical Installations Water Quality Monitoring.
