Agricultural Field Technician

Provide support for the field, crop and plant based activities within the Field Research Centre situated in the Faculty of Agriculture & Life Sciences. 

Mō te tūka | The role

Seeking applications from candidates with a strong background in either practical farming or a mechanical field to provide support for the field, crop and farm-based activities within the Field Research Centre.

You will be working work between the Field Research Centre (FRC) and other University-owned Research Farms - Ashley Dene Farm, Johnstone Memorial Laboratory (JML) and satellite properties.

Some tasks of the role include:

  • Providing support for the field, crop and plant-based activities within the FRC area of responsibility, which will assist with successful outcomes for teaching and research programmes for internal and external customers.
  • Providing support and assisting with the development of the skills of lesser experienced staff members to carry out general activities within the FRC area of responsibility.
  • Providing support with general farm activities
  • Conducting minor repairs and maintenance of FRC field equipment.

This is a permanent role working 37.5 hours per week based at our Lincoln Campus and Dairy Farms.  You will need flexibility to work between the hours of 7am - 9pm.

Remuneration for this role is $60,000 - $65,000 per annum.

Kā tino Pūkeka/Whēako | Essential skills/experience for the role

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Either Dip Ag and min two years general farming experience or, minimum of four years general farming experience, including knowledge of cultivation techniques, fencing and general stock husbandry (preferred).
  • Experience in specialized agricultural research techniques - precision drilling, seed bed preparation (preferred)
  • An ability to safely operate a tractor, implements and quad bike.
  • An ability to operate a chainsaw safely.
  • Operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment associated with seed production and related research.
  • Experience with irrigation and spray applications
  • Current and valid driver's licence
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Word and Excel
