Plant & Food Research (PFR) is a New Zealand science company delivering research and development designed to grow competitive advantage for clients in the horticulture, wine, cropping, seafood and associated high value food sectors worldwide.

Our summer studentship programme creates a special "career experience" for high calibre candidates. Our unique programme includes a full induction training day, a career planning session identifying potential pathways, a specific project - designed for you, as well as a final farewell and awards function.

This project is developing analytical methods to enable selection of new kiwiberry and kiwiplum varieties that have the right balance of colour, health and taste in their edible skins.

Duties

Their work will focus on building a chemical database of target compounds identified through literature mining, metabolomic screening and pathway analyses. They will work with chemists and data scientists to test the associations between target compounds found in the edible skins and their subjective sensory data.  

Criteria for the Position

  • Organic chemistry and/or biochemistry, including laboratory experience
  • Ideally experience in programming and data analysis e.g. with R or Python
  • An interest in foods and/or human physiology
