A bit about us
At Plant & Food Research, we believe science can create a better future. By finding smarter, greener options today, we're helping secure the world we want to live in tomorrow. With our partners, we use world-leading science to improve the way they grow, fish, harvest and share food. Every day, we have 1000 people working across Aotearoa New Zealand and the world to help deliver healthy foods from the world's most sustainable systems. With a  number of funded projects, the Nelson Seafood team is growing and, if you meet the criteria below, we would love to hear from you!

What you will be doing

You will play a key role in supporting the Seafood Production group in a number of exciting Research and Development projects, in the areas of aquaculture, wild fish capture and handling, and finfish culture and husbandry.

You will support our seafood R&D by setting up and running trials, managing and analysing data, preparing progress reports, and contributing to scientific publications. You could be working in a variety of environments including our land-based facility, on commercial fishing vessels and at our sea pen in the Marlborough Sounds.

Most of all you will be passionate about making a positive difference to NZ's aquaculture and seafood industries and you will want to apply knowledge and skills to develop real-world solutions, including contributing to the sustainable and productive use of our oceans.

What you will need

An undergraduate degree in aquaculture, biology, engineering or marine science, and at least 5 years relevant work experience - ideally in an R&D environment.

Practical experience from working in aquaculture and the marine environment or related fields.  It will be essential that you are comfortable to work on vessels in the open sea environment.

An ability to work with minimal supervision, experience with data management and analysis and an awareness pertaining to sustainability and animal ethics.

You will be able to interact and communicate effectively with fishing, aquaculture and seafood processing industries.

What you will get

The opportunity to work within a friendly, team-based environment that encourages and supports work-life balance, and to contribute to exciting projects with an organisation who has an excellent reputation for its science and for being a great place to work! And all this while being based at our world-class Nelson Research Centre.

At PFR, we encourage and support career development, and offer excellent employee benefits including generous leave provisions and employer contribution to superannuation, and subsidised health insurance.
