Aim of project and nature of duties/techniques:

To assist with the quality delivery of engineering services for the maintenance of buildings and associated plant and machinery that meets best practice and aligns with business needs. To provide engineering and technical support to the Mount Albert Research Centre Assets and Services Team.

Description

Plant & Food Research (PFR) is a New Zealand science company delivering research and development designed to grow competitive advantage for clients in the horticulture, wine, cropping, seafood and associated high value food sectors worldwide.

The Assets & Services Team are looking for an energetic summer student to help with general site duties, small projects, energy management, and maintenance software administration. This highly varied role will provide the successful candidate a strong foundation for a career as a Building Services Engineer, Consultant, or Facilities Engineer.

Our summer studentship programme creates a special "career experience" for high calibre candidates. Our unique programme includes a full induction training day, a career planning session identifying potential pathways, a specific project - designed for you, as well as a final farewell and awards function.

Duties

Site Engineering

  • Assisting with plant and equipment troubleshooting
  • Assisting with engineering design and project delivery
  • Liaise with contractors to ensure quality delivery of services
  • Monitor the site BMS, Access Control, CCTV, and other control systems
  • Manage small projects and liaise with the appropriate stakeholders
  • Utilisation and development of the site maintenance software
  • Actively contribute to discussions about new building technologies and opportunities
  • Raising health and safety risks
  • Assisting with project commissioning and verifying functional goals are achieved

Energy Management

  • Process and energy flow mapping (energy and mass balances)
  • Computer based energy modelling
  • Investigating plant and process modifications, and conducting trials
  • Investigating fuel switching opportunities
  • Assist in raising energy savings awareness in the organisation
  • Assisting with project commissioning and verifying energy savings and associated carbon reduction.

Criteria for the Position

  • Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Student
  • Strong interest in Building Services Engineering
  • Interest in Project Management or Facilities Management
  • Comfortable in unfamiliar and highly varied working conditions
  • Exceptional multi-tasking, prioritisation, and time management skills
  • Natural problem solver and tinkerer
  • Effective communication skills
  • Highly attentive to detail
  • Uncompromising on quality of delivery of projects and services
  • Comfortable learning unfamiliar software
  • Team player but also able to work autonomously
