Our team and mission
The RF Systems Division is responsible for space instrumentation and end-to-end communication systems, subsystems, and equipment and technologies, covering the following:
- Telecommunication system and subsystem design and validation;
- Radio navigation system and subsystem design and validation;
- Commercial ground and user segment products for navigation, telecommunications and remote sensing;
- Systems for tracking, telemetry and command (TT&C) and payload data transmission (PDT) for communication, navigation, remote sensing and scientific applications;
- Systems testing for performance evaluation and validation;
- Laboratories to test/prove the soundness of concepts and validate them.
This Young Graduate Traineeship opportunity is available within the Systems Security Engineering Section.
The Systems Security Engineering Section, in full adherence and compliance with the ESA Security Framework, covers the security engineering processes, techniques and technologies dealing with the security of systems from end to end, subsystems, elements and equipment contributing to or implementing specific detection/mitigation and protection measures, analysis and methodology for vulnerability and risk assessments, and accreditation and certification processes and standards, including system design tools and equipment.

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship
You will, as a Young Graduate Trainee in the Systems Security Engineering Section, work on research and development activities relating to security in 5G and 6G, with a special focus on non-terrestrial networks (NTNs). This will include research, security assessment, hands-on testing (in a simulation environment) and design of risks relating to topics such as network slicing, software-defined networks, network function virtualisation, Internet of Things (IoT), virtualisation techniques, edge computing, etc. and proposal of mitigation techniques and defensive measures. Implementation of the identified mitigation techniques and measures in software may follow, along with subsequent evaluation and testing.
You will have the opportunity to work with experts on the above-mentioned topics and become involved in related R&D activities.

Education
You should have just completed, or be in the final year of your Master’ s degree in cyber security, telecommunications or computer science.
Additional requirements
You should have good interpersonal and communication skills and should be able to work in a multicultural environment, both independently and as part of a team.
You should also have:
- A background in telecommunications or cyber security
- Good knowledge of virtualisation techniques
- Programming skills (e.g. Python)
- A background in 5G/6G is an asset
- A background in software-defined networks is a further asset
The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
