University Lecturer in History/International Relations/European Union Studies (fte 1.0)

The Leiden University Institute for History, in the context of funding made available for teaching, research and societal impact activities within a newly created Interdisciplinary Hub on ‘European Approaches to Societal Challenges’ (EASC), invites applications for a University Lecturer in History/International Relations/European Union Studies (fte 1.0) starting date 1 January 2022.

The Institute for History seeks to expand its academic staff by appointment of an university lecturer with teaching and research expertise in the field of Europe in Global Affairs. The lecturer will teach courses as needed in the History programme, the European Union Studies track of the MA International Relations and the ‘Europe’ specialization within the BA International Studies and s/he will participate in the research programme History and International Studies, 1900  present of the Institute for History.

The lecturer will be primarily responsible for research and teaching on Europe in Global Affairs, in one or more of the following thematic areas: EU external relations,  EU and European history, culture and human rights, international environmental issues.

Key responsibilities

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Play an active and coordinating role within the existing community of EU scholars across the Faculty of Humanities and within the ‘European Approaches to Societal Challenges’ Hub –  an important requirement and a key aspect of the activities to be developed as part of this position;
  • Teach in the History programmes, the MA International Relations and the BA International Studies, especially on traditional and new topics related to the field of Europe in Global Affairs;
  • Supervise BA and MA theses, and if applicable co-supervising PhD theses;
  • Research and publish through appropriate academic channels;
  • Contribute to curriculum development and programme management;
  • Acquire project funding at the national, European and international levels;
  • Participate in the research programme History and International Studies of the Institute for History;
  • Communicate research results beyond academia.

Selection criteria                                               

  • A PhD degree in History, European (Union) Studies, International Relations, or another relevant discipline;
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the field of Europe in Global Affairs, as specified above;
  • A record of peer reviewed academic publications in relevant fields;
  • A strong academic teaching record at the university level;
  • Academic administrative / management experience;
  • An excellent command of English and (preferably also) Dutch. If the successful applicant is not fluent in Dutch, s/he will be expected to learn Dutch within a period of two years (Dutch language learning is funded by the Institute for History);
  • This position may come with additional project funds. Well-developed plans for ongoing and future research that explicitly reflect on the relationship between the various components of the EASC interdisciplinary hub are therefore an important criterion in the selection process.

Upon appointment, depending on experience and formal qualifications to date, the lecturer is required to obtain a nationally standardized teaching skills certification (Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs, or BKO). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, s/he must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.

Leiden University’s Interdisciplinary Hub on European Approaches to Societal Challenges (EASC) serves as a core teaching, research and societal impact platform that brings together colleagues from four major faculties to advance synergies and impactful initiatives amongst experts working on European and European Union approaches to pressing societal challenges. The Hub’s aim is not only to connect and amplify Leiden University’s expertise on Europe and the European Union, but to also to increase its impact and visibility amongst a variety of stakeholders in existing and new European and global networks, including in Brussels itself.

Terms and conditions

The appointment (fte 1.0) is in temporary employment for 18 months (January 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024), with the prospect of a permanent position after positive evaluation. The salary is in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the Association of Dutch Universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience. The gross monthly salary is € 3557 (scale 10-4) to € 6181 (scale 12) for a full working week. Leiden University also offers an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%.

Depending on qualifications, as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly regarding teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience, the appointee may either start at the appropriate step in scale 10, 11 or 12. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.
