Two assistant professors Natural Language Processing (# of pos: 2)

Updated: almost 2 years ago
Job Type: Temporary
Deadline: 12 Aug 2022

Within both our research and education, we see an increasing role within many of the scientific subjects and disciplines for natural language processing (NLP) technology in our two Computer Science departments at Delft University of Technology: Software Technology (ST) and Intelligent Systems (INSY)

Therefore, we like to extend our current staff and research & teaching activities with two new colleagues working on natural language processing. The two new assistant professors will be expected to have their own research lines that can be well embedded into the larger research landscape of our current computer science research areas, where they are expected to join our current forces to together develop both the discipline and usable systems for human interaction with natural language.

Department of Intelligent Systems (INSY)

One assistant professor will be working within the INSY department. The INSY department aims to enable man and machine to deal with the increasing volume and complexity of data, in close cooperation with their environment. The department integrates fundamental research, engineering, and design in the interlocking fields of data processing, interpretation, visualization and interaction using model- and knowledge-based methods and algorithms. INSY consists of five research groups (more details can be found here ). The new colleague will be working within the Multimedia Computing Group , but collaborations with other groups are envisaged and encouraged.

At INSY we are looking for an assistant professor who can strengthen our team and research on the general topic of NLP for human-compatible natural language systems, particularly on the topics of

  • NLP for natural language understanding
  • NLP for natural language generation

or related areas, for spoken and written conversational AI.

Ideally, you will combine methods from AI and linguistics, with skills, competences and interests that would enable building a strong NLP research line within Computer Science.

Department of Software Technology (ST)

One assistant professor will be located within the ST department (more details can be found here ), the Web Information Systems group . You are expected to have a primary research focus on natural language processing for written text, generated in social and scientific contexts such as social media posts, blogs, threads in online fora, news articles, wiki articles, scientific papers and reports.

Research of the ST department contributes both to the foundations of software and computer systems, and to the understanding of the operation of such systems. Its research approach is both fundamental - designing algorithms and abstractions, developing new concepts and theories, and identifying principles, as well as experimental - engineering and analysing the behaviour of actual systems.

We are looking for, but not exclusively, candidates with research profiles relevant to the roles of knowledge and humans in natural language processing. In particular, we are interested in candidates who can strengthen our team and research on the following topics:

  • NLP for knowledge extraction and knowledge graph construction
  • NLP enhanced by human computation and interaction
  • NLP for information retrieval in Web and conversational search.
