Job description

The Department of International and European Law of the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University intends to appoint a fulltime Assistant Professor of European Union Law (‘Universitair Docent’) with a starting date of 1 March 2023 or any date soon after that, with 15 August 2023 at the latest. Applicants must have proven expertise in European Union law. The appointee will be required to teach at Bachelor and Master level, to contribute to the development of courses, to conduct high quality research within the Faculty’s research programme Integration of and Interaction between legal orders and the Maastricht Centre for European Law, to write research and funding proposals and to fulfill administrative and management duties.

Requirements
  • PhD degree in European Union Law (or you will have obtained a PhD degree at the time of appointment);
  • Excellent research and teaching skills;
  • Flexible, proactive, and able to work both independently and in a team;
  • Excellent presentation and organisational skills;
  • Excellent English language skills (written and spoken);
  • Knowledge of the Dutch language is a distinct advantage;
  • Maastricht University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, s/he must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.

Conditions of employment

You will be employed temporarily for 12 or 18 months (depending on your employment history) as assistant professor (level 2) and will co-develop and agree to specific development goals. Towards the end of this contract period the decision will be taken on whether or not to grant an employment contract for an indefinite period. Your development goals will also allow you to grow further to the position of assistant professor (level 1).

The salary depends on academic qualifications and experience. The salary will be set between minimum gross month salary € 3.974,-- and maximum gross month salary of € 5.439,-- (according to assistant professor 2), based on a full-time employment, of the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities. For people recruited from abroad a reduced income tax rate may apply. Maastricht University has attractive employment conditions, which include a pension scheme, holidays, holiday allowance and an end of year bonus.

Department of International and European Law

The Department of International and European Law is the largest department of the Faculty of Law. Its work is focused on areas of institutional and substantive European Union law, public international law, international human rights law and international economic law, which play a prominent place in the Law Faculty’s teaching and research programmes.

The Department is responsible for courses in the following Bachelor and Master programmes of the Faculty of Law: the Bachelor Dutch Law, the Bachelor European Law School, the Master European Law School and the Master Globalisation and Law. It also provides courses at University College Maastricht, University College Venlo, the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of Maastricht University and the Law Faculty of Hasselt University in Belgium.
