Job description

We are looking for a tenure track assistant professor in International Business and International Management that fit the research profile of our department. Regarding teaching, you will contribute to courses in the Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Master of Science (MSc) programmes offered by the department, including the supervision of bachelor’s and master’s theses. Contribution to the highly selective two-year research master is also possible. We also expect that candidates are willing to take recent developments on board in their teaching such as Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, Future Prosperity and Sustainability. These themes are recognized as societally relevant “focus areas” in our School.

You will have the ability to conduct high-quality, creative research in the areas of interest to the department and publish your work in high-ranked international journals. You will work in a dynamic academic environment with excellent research facilities.


Qualifications

To qualify as assistant professor, you should have:

  • a PhD in (International) Management/Business
  • expertise in the above-mentioned field proven by the ability (or the potential) to publish in the top-tier international academic peer-reviewed journals
  • a proven interest and ability in developing courses and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level and in mentoring students
  • an international network
  • good interpersonal skills and ability to work individually and with a team
  • good command of spoken and written English
  • organizational qualities and excellent communication skills; and
  • potential to generate external funding for research projects
  • you are willing to obtain an University Teaching Qualification (Dutch: BKO) within three years and a Senior Teaching Qualification (Dutch: SKO) within five years.

Tenure track positions at the Faculty of Economics and Business are temporary positions subject to a tenure decision at the end of the fifth year. Formal tenure track requirements include criteria with respect to education, research and citizenship and service. Assistant professors on tenure track have a six year period in which their research time is protected and set at 50% of their contractual work time.


Organisation

As a result of sustained growth in our international business programs, the Department of Global Economics & Management, University of Groningen (Netherlands) invites applications for a position at the rank of tenure track assistant professor of International Business.

The department is an active and international research group, consisting of approximately 80 people. The department is unified by its interest to perform theory driven empirical research on (de-)globalization, sustainability, global value chains, multinational firms, CSR, and cultural and institutional change. The department brings together expertise from full professors in international business (Sjoerd Beugelsdijk, Alan Muller, Rian Drogendijk) as well as international economics and economic geography (Harry Garretsen, Steven Brakman, and Bart Los). All courses taught by the department are international in content and instruction is in English. Members of our department have published in wide range of top journals including Journal of International Business Studies, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Academy of Management Review, Global Strategy Journal, Journal of World Business as well as other journals that belong to the eco-system of IB journals.

The department offers two three-year bachelor programmes, namely the BSc International Business, and the BSc Economics & Business Economics. In addition, we are responsible for two one-year MSc programmes: the MSc in International Business & Management, and the MSc in Economic Development and Globalization. Members of the department also teach in the selective honours programme for BSc students, as well as the challenging two-year Research Master programme, which is intended for students aiming at a PhD.


Conditions of employment

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• a salary depending on qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of € 3,974 (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 6,181 (salary scale 12) gross salary per month for a full-time position as Assistant Professora full-time position (1.0 FTE)
• a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income
• an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance
• minimum of 29 holidays and additional 12 holidays in case of full-time employment
• participation in a pension scheme for employees.

Favourable tax treatment may apply to non-Dutch applicants.

We offer an appointment for seven years, on the condition of a positive mid-term evaluation at the end of the third year of employment. The seventh year is intended to compensate for any ‘life events’ (e.g., prolonged illness or parental leave) which might take place during the first six years. Based on a positive final evaluation at the beginning of the sixth year at the latest, tenure will be granted. Tenure entails a permanent contract and promotion to the rank of associate professor.
