Student Assistant Research Project Platform Labour

For the ERC-funded research project entitled Platform Labour, the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis and the Department of Media Studies are looking for an enthusiastic student-assistant. The Platform Labour research project investigates how digital platforms are transforming urban landscapes in the areas of labour, short-term rental, and the provision of care/social support. Focusing on Amsterdam, Berlin, and New York, the project team is particularly interested in how the opportunities and challenges of digital platforms are impacting/impacted by gender, class, and racial inequalities. We are looking for a student assistant who is excited to take on the following main responsibilities: (1) maintenance of/content aggregation for the project’s website , (2) assisting the members of the project team with research activities and the organization of workshops, and (3) providing general administrative assistance to the project leader, Dr. Niels van Doorn.


What are you going to do

This dynamic position will allow you to work in a cutting-edge research environment where you are encouraged to use your creativity as well as your organizational and analytical skills to both support and think with the research team.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • regularly update the project’s website and send out occasional newsletters;
  • provide administrative support for the organization of (on- and offline) workshops related to the team members’ subprojects, including communication with stakeholders, speakers, media outlets, caterers, and other relevant parties;
  • provide technical and practical support during and after workshops and other events organized by the research team, including note-taking, transcription, and drafting blog posts;
  • assist team members with the gathering of research materials, the tracking of public discussions and events related to the project’s key themes, in addition to other research-related assistance;
  • assist the project leader with general administrative tasks pertaining to the project.

What do we require of you

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated multitasker with a keen eye for detail, who enjoys keeping things organized in a dynamic work environment where multiple research projects overlap.

Your experience and profile:

We are looking for a candidate who:

  • is a student at the University of Amsterdam until at least the Summer of 2022;
  • has experience with organizational and administrative work, as well as strong social skills and the ability to work in a team;
  • has excellent professional English writing and speaking skills;
  • is well-organized and has demonstrable IT and social media skills;
  • has a background or demonstrable interest in new media studies, sociology, labor studies, and/or urban studies.
  • German language skills are highly desirable (but not mandatory).

Our offer

We offer a temporary part-time contract for the period of one year. Preferred starting date is 1 November 2021

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week, ranges from €2,310 up to a maximum of €2,502. This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
