Do you want to be part of a program that has been renowned for years for its high quality, small scale and intensive approach to teaching artificial intelligence? Then apply now for the position of Assistant Lecturer in our Master of Artificial Intelligence program.

The Master of AI program is part of the Graduate School of Informatics within the Faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam. The program is aligned with the research expertise of the Informatics Institute. The courses in the program are taught by researchers from the Informatics Institute, with the support of a team of enthusiastic Assistant Lecturers.

What are you going to do?
As an Assistant Lecturer you will work closely with the course coordinators who are responsible for the theoretical and pedagogical aspects of the courses. You will assist with the practical educational matters of the program and provide guidance and coaching to students with their courses and master thesis projects. This position gives you the opportunity to have a real impact on the learning experience of students since you will be closely involved with both the courses and students.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Preparing course material for lectures, tutorials, workshops, and seminars;
  • Participating in the supervision of practical coursework, advising students on skills, methods, and techniques to help them acquire knowledge;
  • Supporting students in organizing and executing their Master thesis research, including the organization and supervision of academic processes;
  • Participating in the assessment process using a variety of methods and techniques to provide effective, timely, and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning;
  • Organizing extracurricular activities for students, such as ad-hoc workshops and social events, to enhance their learning experience;
  • Engaging in professional development to remain current and ensure the application of recent advances in knowledge to teaching.

Specific Requirements

Your experience and profile
A Master of Science degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, information science, or a related discipline.

  • Teaching experience and course administration experience is a plus.
  • Good organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Pro-active and flexible attitude.
  • Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly.

Additional Information

A temporary contract of 4 years (with a 2 month probation period) for 38 hours per week. The preferred starting date is June 1.

The salary, depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract, will be € 3,226 to € 5,090 (scale 10) gross per month, based on a fulltime contract (38 hours a week). This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

The Faculty of Science offers you a four-year contract, which includes 0.1 FTE dedicated to training and development. This combination of working as a lecturer while following training is called the Lecturer Development Program (Docent Ontwikkel Programma, DOP). The purpose of the DOP is to optimise your position on the job market (employability and career opportunities) once your temporary employment comes to an end. During the course of your four-year contract, you will follow training modules together with other junior lecturers; this will include the opportunity to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). Together with your supervisor, you will draw up a Personal Development Plan (Persoonlijk Ontwikkelplan, POP) detailing the specifics of your customised program.

NB! It is not possible to offer this contract to candidates who are currently, or in the past 6 months, employed at the University of Amsterdam, with the exception of student-assistents and promovendi. Your possible application will therefore not be processed for that reason.

Besides the salary and a vibrant and challenging environment at Science Park we offer you multiple fringe benefits:
