Function description
You recognise the impact academic research can have on society and want to contribute to making research possible. Leiden University stimulates both curiosity driven and impact driven research, as well as encourages interdisciplinary research. Your first priority as Grant Advisor will be getting to know researchers and help them with their efforts to get funded. You will have a crucial bridge function within the university, which means that you have affinity for multiple research areas and possess a natural ability to identify connections between research areas. You have a hands-on mentality and know the challenges of the playing field you are operating in to get the job done before the inevitable deadline. You will work closely with the other support staff of the Research Support Network to set up robust research projects that lead to winning the funding bids. As grant advisor, you will play an important role in connecting researchers and enabling exciting interdisciplinary research that provide a strong basis for solving major societal challenges.
You will be part of the active and lively (at least we think so) Research Funding Support Community, a community of first line and second line grant advisors who actively work together to cover all grant support in the university. Your role will be an expert grant advisor role in the Grant Development Team that fulfils the second line function, and you will need to make your own and visible contribution to the community. To complement the team we are looking for a senior grant advisor who knows the tricks of the trade, keeps their cool and gets energy from helping researchers one-to-one. As expert you also fulfil an important function in the organisation of events related to collaborative funding and train, coach and work together with the first line support staff in the institutes and faculties. Never a dull day.
Key responsibilities:
- Support researchers in preparing a variety of proposals, ranging from individual grants to collaborative proposals, by assessing their ideas and reviewing proposals;
- Connect researchers in the university to facilitate interdisciplinary research;
- Build good relationships with the funding agencies, develop and maintain expert knowledge on research grants together with the entire team and community;
- Share expert knowledge widely internally, and contribute to the organisation of training courses and events;
Your profile / selection criteria
- university degree, preferably with research experience in either a Humanities or an Exact science discipline;
- at least five years of working experience in a Dutch academic environment in the capacity of grant advisor, with excellent knowledge of the current funding landscape;
- natural networker with great personal skills to motivate others;
- ability to quickly conceptualise;
- excellent oral and writing skills in both Dutch and English. English native speakers should have the ability to acquire good Dutch oral and writing skills within a year;
- enthusiastic, inventive, service- as well as results-oriented;
- functions well in multi-disciplinary teams. Likes the expert role, but possesses the flexibility to make other contributions when needed;
- ability to effectively manage a broad range of projects with competing deadlines.

- An appointment for a period of one year. A permanent appointment may be possible after the temporary term depending on performance and available budget.
- A competitive salary in the range of EUR 5247 – 7305 gross per month, depending on experience (pay scale 12-13, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities), based on a full time position.

Organisation
The grant advisor works from the Grant Development Team, which is part of the Strategy and Academics Affairs Directorate (SAZ) within the Administration and Central Services department. The Strategy and Academic Affairs (SAZ) is part of the Administration and Central Services of the University Leiden. The 45 SAZ employees support the Executive Board and the faculties in the field of strategic development of the university in education, research, impact and valorisation, sustainability, internationalisation, subsidy advice and diversity & inclusion. SAZ advises and supports the formulation, design, monitoring, evaluation and adjustment of strategy and policy, working together with colleagues from across the university.
The Grant Development Team as part of the larger Research Funding Community focuses on expert support for the acquisition of research funding. This entails supporting researchers in their bids for funding, as well as supporting agenda setting in- and outside the university.
